Amazon has announced that it will end its free, ad-supported streaming service Freevee in the coming weeks; Freevee provided a free platform to watch movies, TV shows, and even live channels.
An Amazon representative told Variety: “Prime Video is Prime members-only entertainment produced by Amazon MGM Studios, licensed movies and series, content from other services as an additional subscription, and live sports, blockbuster movies and series to rent or buy, FAST (free ad-supported streaming TV) channels, and complete streaming content from Amazon Freevee, allowing customers to personalize their viewing experience, a first-stop built into an entertainment destination.”
They added: “To provide a simpler viewing experience for our customers, we have decided to phase out the Freevee brand. There will be no change to the content available to Prime members, and the vast amount of free streaming content accessible to non-Prime members, including select originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed movies and series, and an extensive library of FAST channels, all available on Prime Video.”
Here at Tom's Guide, we believe Freevee is the best free streaming service. And as a regular user, I can't help but feel a little disappointed by this move. For one thing, Freevee is an easy-to-navigate, dedicated platform for free content, making it super easy to find shows and movies without having to navigate the Prime Video interface.
Now that Freevee will eventually be integrated into Prime Video, those who have not subscribed may have to sort through paid options or experience additional prompts to subscribe.
Amazon's decision to close Freevee and integrate its content into Prime Video likely reflects the increasing overlap between the two services. With the launch of ad-supported tiers, Prime Video now offers a similar viewing experience to what Freevee used to offer. As a result, Freevee's value on its own may have declined.
Freevee's library of free content will not disappear, but will be incorporated into the larger Prime Video platform. Amazon intends to make Freevee shows and movies available on Prime Video's free ad-supported streaming channel.
However, Prime Video's new ad-supported plan has made the platform feel less user-friendly. Previously known for ad-free streaming, Prime Video is now making ads the norm unless users pay more for their existing subscriptions. Moreover, the viewing experience is about to get even worse, given that Prime Video will introduce more ads in 2025.
Adding all of Freevee's content to Prime Video could even make the interface cluttered and difficult to navigate. I want to jump in and find what I want to watch without wasting time scrolling through a crowded home screen with even more categories. Now that a large number of new ad-supported shows and movies have been added, it may be harder to look through everything and get to the content I want to watch quickly.
However, I'm not ready to abandon it completely. If this integration works, it could work. We will have to watch as Amazon phases out Freevee over the next few weeks.
