When Netflix released the teaser trailer for “Carry-On,” a thriller set in a crowded airport during the holiday season, I assured you that this film would replace “Die Hard” as the go-to movie for adrenaline junkies during the Christmas season. Let's just say that the reviews on the Internet were not very positive. Now that the full trailer has been released, I'm doubling down.
The newest trailer for Carry On is about three minutes long and begins with a hilarious holiday classic (“It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” by Andy Williams), a young TSA employee named Ethan, played by Taron Egerton, Christmas Eve shift and how he must deal with all kinds of difficult passengers. The real nightmare begins when Ethan picks up a pair of discarded earphones.
Through that earpiece, a mysterious stranger (who may look familiar to Jason Bateman) instructs Ethan to put his dangerous suitcase through the security scanner under threat of intimidation. The stranger soon proves that he is not bluffing and that his threats are very real, and now it is up to a lowly TSA employee to outwit this ruthless criminal and save his girlfriend (Sofia Carson).
It's a pretty fantastic premise for a thriller and should be a nice change of pace compared to Netflix's other holiday offerings (mostly romantic comedies). Furthermore, while it probably won't ultimately surpass “Die Hard” (let's face it, that's a very high bar), it's just the perfect accompaniment to a holiday movie marathon.
This new trailer seems a little too far into spoiler territory. Of course, I'd have to convince my family to stop re-watching “Love Actually” first!
At this point, the only question would be when we can watch “Carry On” on Netflix. Carry On will be available on Netflix on December 13.”
Meanwhile, Netflix has already begun releasing films for the 2024 holiday season. The streaming service's first Christmas movie of the year arrived last week, and next up is the romantic comedy Hot Frosty, about a woman who falls in love with a snowman who comes to life.
