Apple AirTag 2 expected to launch in mid-2025 with chip upgrade and improved tracking

According to a new report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, a new version of the Apple AirTag will be available in mid-2025.

Apple first released the item tracking accessory in April 2021, making AirTag nearly four years old.

Garman wrote in his PowerOn newsletter, “In May, we reported that Apple was working on a new AirTag, codenamed B589, for release around the middle of next year. That accessory is now undergoing manufacturing testing and Apple is preparing to bring it to market.”

This report is consistent with earlier reports that we won't see a second generation AirTag until sometime in 2025. Last October, supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that mass production of the next AirTag had been delayed until the fourth quarter of 2024 and has now been delayed; in January, Gurman reported that Apple had delayed the update due to AirTag overproduction.

Apple's “retail backrooms and Apple device storage warehouses are still full of AirTags,” he wrote.

The newsletter noted that AirTag 2 will feature an upgraded chip that will improve location tracking. This suggests that AirTag may feature the next-generation Ultra Wideband chip launched in the iPhone 15 lineup.

Previously, Kuo had reported that the new AirTag would integrate Vision Pro. However, this feature may not materialize as sales have been slow and production has reportedly been halted.

Allegedly, the built-in speaker will be more complicated to remove as part of the anti-stalking measures. However, Gurman says that we should not expect to see a different looking AirTag, and that there should be no significant design changes.

Finally, he noted that the second generation AirTag will have “better range,” which should make the Precision Finding feature more accurate over longer distances.
