The four-part true-crime documentary series “Oath of Silence: The Assassination of Annie Mae” examines the circumstances surrounding the December 1975 disappearance of political activist and indigenous rights campaigner Annie Mae Aquash (Mickmack name Nagset Eask).

Aquash, a member of the American Indian Movement (AIM), participated in several occupations and other political actions during a time when the United States was full of mayhem and political violence, but AIM believed their organization was being compromised by FBI informants. And some believed that Aquash may have been one of them.

Her body was found in South Dakota in February 1976 and was initially ruled to have died of exposure. Exhumation and subsequent autopsy revealed that she had actually been executed with a bullet to the head. Investigations continued, and from the 2000s through 2010, AIM members were arrested one after another.

This complex and tragic case, with its twists and turns, is brought to life by Annie Mae's daughter as she embarks on a journey to unravel the mystery left behind about her mother's death and place it in the context of the struggles that Indigenous and First Nations women still face in their own communities today.
