At any given time, Apple has many products. Some we've heard rumors about and some we never even imagined are being worked on in Cupertino. What is reportedly not in Apple's plans, however, is a new AirPods Max headset with major changes. Those who have been holding off on the most recent release in anticipation of a new set with more features and changes may want to stop waiting.
This report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman states that Apple currently has “no concrete plans” to change or update its most expensive headphones again “in any meaningful way.”
This should not come as a huge surprise since the most recent (and incredibly underwhelming) AirPods Max announcement happened in September. Unless Apple released the AirPods Max with a minor upgrade as a stopgap to make a more significant release, which is not usually the company's M.O., we won't be seeing a new pair anytime soon.
“I expect the company to keep the Max headphones in their current form for the foreseeable future,” Garman continued.
As for why Apple will not release new AirPods, Garman believes it is because the $549 headphones are not selling well enough for Apple to justify the development cost. Would a refresh be a good way for Apple to increase sales? However, if the current models are not selling well, the market may not want Apple's high-end headphones, preferring the company's AirPods and AirPods Pro earphones.
Knowing that there will not be a new model coming out anytime soon, getting the current model is a safe bet. There are currently several Black Friday specials on the Lightning-equipped AirPods Max, with some retailers offering them for $399 instead of $549.
