New leaked information has revealed that Sony will be releasing a new game console.
Bloomberg reported that Sony has a new portable gaming console in early development that will allow PlayStation fans to play PS5 games on the go. This would be a true handheld console, scrapping the game streaming capabilities of the PlayStation Portal. Games will run natively on the console, as they will on the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
The new console is considered the successor to the PlayStation Portal, which will undergo a major overhaul. The Portal relied on wirelessly streaming games from the PS5 and suffered from latency issues that hampered gameplay.
According to Bloomberg's sources, Portal's original intent was to compete with Valve's Steam Deck, and the vision changed late in development. This announcement may be a return to this original goal.
Xbox recently announced that it is also working on a handheld console, and the news of the upcoming Switch 2 appears to have triggered a next-generation handheld console war.
Unfortunately, don't expect an official announcement anytime soon. Sony has refused to comment on the announcement to Bloomberg, and it is highly unlikely that Sony will even bring it to market. Still, the opportunity to play the best PS5 games while on the go is a truly exciting prospect.
The PlayStation Portal is a rather expensive accessory for the console, essentially adding $199 to the PS5 console needed to store and run games, and fans will no doubt be excited to see a powerful new option that doesn't require a PS5 at all.
The PS5 is a great addition to the PS5 console, and will be available for $99.
