2024 was a strong year for Microsoft's Surface hardware, laptops and tablets designed to take full advantage of the company's Windows 11 OS.
We called the Surface Pro 11 “the best Surface in years” and the Surface Laptop 7 “a true MacBook Air competitor.” Both prominently featured Microsoft's Copilot+ feature, pushed AI to the forefront, and further improved the overall experience.
And now Windows Central's Zac Bowden tells us what Microsoft has planned for 2025; according to Bowden's sources, Microsoft is planning its annual Surface Pro and Surface Laptop refresh, as well as a new Surface Laptop Studio and possibly some kind of new 11-inch device.
In reverse order, the 11-inch model is the most enigmatic, described by Bowden's source as a “Surface Go-sized Laptop Go hybrid with premium materials and components,” which certainly sounds intriguing. If it does see the light of day, the SoC is expected to be the Snapdragon X Plus, but that's all we know so far. Next up is the new Surface Laptop Studio, a follow-up to the Surface Laptop Studio 2 announced in 2023, a canvas for doodling in pencil or watching movies in style, with a unique It features a hinge design.
No word on specs, but Bowden has heard that a 16-inch model is being considered.
After this year's Qualcomm-powered Surface Laptop and Surface Pro, Microsoft is apparently bringing Intel back into the mix with the 2025 model.
Specifically, both devices are said to feature Lunar Lake. And while Lunar Lake benchmarks show slightly weaker performance than the Apple M3 and Qualcomm's Snapdragon X in single-core and multi-core tests, it is significantly more capable of handling AI tasks.
Bowden does not expect any design changes in either, given that they were updated relatively recently. He does think, however, that Microsoft may bring back the anti-reflective coating on the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6. He also believes that the laptops might be equipped with an optional card reader, and that this time a 5G version might be available.
ETAs for all of these devices are undecided; Bowden thinks the new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop will appear in Q1 2025, while the others could appear as late as the fall. Whenever they appear, we hope they will be good enough to rock our best laptops list.
