There is nothing more disappointing than buckling up for a long drive, launching your favorite playlist, and realizing that the car you are driving has clearly taken a back seat to sound quality. Sure, I may be a little spoiled with great home speakers and the best headphones, but it's no secret that many cars are inferior in the music playback department.
That said, I notice when a car's sound quality is particularly lackluster. With the Volvo EX90, however, I recently had the opposite experience - I found it to be particularly spectacular.
The Volvo EX90 is the hottest electric SUV available, starting at $80,000, and with 32 Bowers and Wilkins speakers, this luxurious vehicle has given me hope that, if used right, in-car listening can be an extraordinary experience. Perhaps partnering with the world's most iconic recording studio to engineer such would help.
Dubbed the “Abbey Road Studios Mode,” the EX90 is the ideal platform for audiophiles for listening on the go. Designed in partnership with the engineers at Abbey Road Studios, this music setting is intended to bring the unique sonic signature of a recording studio into the car. It was inspired by the actual recording equipment used in-house in the late 1960s
when the Beatles were in and out of Abbey Road creating some of their biggest hits.
With Abbey Road Studios Mode enabled, an interactive UI covers the 14.2” center display. A typical recording studio setup is visualized, including drum set, piano, microphones, stereo speakers, and control room. To tune the sound to your liking, move your finger around the “studio” and choose options to play it more vintage, more modern, narrower, or wider. Several presets are also available.
Selecting the vintage sound gives a subtle warmth that is unique to the patented recording equipment that gave us the rare opportunity to get up close and personal with the insides of Abbey Road Studios. On the other hand, with modern sound, the instruments sound very clear and dynamic.
Thanks to this feature, casual and avid music fans alike will be able to tinker with all kinds of tunings and have fun all day long. Not to mention a certain selling point for hardcore Beatles fans. If the recording studio responsible for the bulk of the band's catalog has endorsed the Volvo EX90 and its Bowers and Wilkins speakers, that's a lot of credibility boost. The Beatles may not be my favorite band, but I appreciate hearing music that matters to me sound the way I know it should.
Of course, the Beatles are not the only big names at Abbey Road Studios. Music legends from Pink Floyd to Adele, Oasis to Lady Gaga have recorded here. So drivers of all musical tastes may find something important to enjoy in EX90.
