We're in the midst of the holiday season, but in between shopping and feasting, there will be time to catch this weekend's new movies and TV shows on streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus.
Two big franchises will be presenting their latest TV shows: the children's adventure story “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” and the adult animated “Creature Commandos,” which kicks off James Gunn's DC Universe. Also scheduled are the British spy thriller “Black Doves” starring Keira Knightley and pop star Sabrina Carpenter's Christmas special.
On the movie front, Clint Eastwood's courtroom drama “Jury No. 2” is available on Premium Video on Demand, and the hit sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is on Max. Here are some of this weekend's highlights.
After the darker, more mature tone of Disney's recent “Star Wars” TV series, this adventure story is for younger viewers. The Skeleton Crew has a “Goonies” vibe that showrunners Jon Watts and Christopher Ford have professed to be inspired by. Jude Law plays Jod-na-Nawood, a Force user who relies on his charm to get him out of a tight spot. But the real protagonists are the four children - Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), KB (Kiriana Clutter), and Neil (Robert Timothy Smith) - who stumble upon a discovery that leads them far from home in a vast galaxy. They are lost in a vast galaxy, far from home.
Episodes 1-2 are now available on Disney Plus
The success of “Slow Horse” has led to a number of top British actors, including Michael Fassbender (“The Agency”), Eddie Redmayne (“Day of the Jackal”), and now Keira Knightley (“Black Dove”). 6 episodes available on Netflix
James Gunn's new DC Universe (DCU) will feature a new Superman before launching with this animated adventure that follows the events of the series “The Peacemaker.” A team of imprisoned monsters are recruited by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) for a mission deemed too dangerous for humans. General Rick Flagg, Sr. (Frank Grillo), is joined by Frankenstein (David Harbour), Princess Ilana (Maria Bakalova), Dr. Lin (Alan Tudyk), Nina Mazursky (Zoe Chao), Bride (Indira Varma), Cirith ( Anya Charotra), and GI Robot (Sean Gunn) lead the team. Think “Suicide Squad,” but even more violent and foul-mouthed. In what may be his last film, 94-year-old director Clint Eastwood delivers a good old fashioned thriller about justice and morality. The film is set in a courtroom drama in the midst of a murder trial. Justin Kemp (Nicholas Hoult) has been selected as one of the jurors, but his wife (Zoe Deutch) is experiencing a dangerous pregnancy and the timing is far from ideal. The defendant is accused of murdering his girlfriend after an argument in a bar. However, as the facts of the case unfold, Justin realizes that he was at the bar on the night in question and that he may have been involved in the death.

Beetlejuice is back. Tim Burton revives the 1988 horror comedy in this sequel that reunites Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O'Hara, along with franchise newcomer Jenna Ortega. Lydia Dietz, now an adult and host of a popular paranormal talk show, is estranged from her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid. Following a family tragedy, three generations of the Dietz family return to their old home in Winter River. Meanwhile, in the afterlife, Betelgeuse is still obsessed with Lydia. It is only a matter of time before Betelgeuse's name is invoked three times. [This moving documentary takes place before and after the horseback riding accident that left Christopher Reeve, aka Superman, mortally wounded and paralyzed from the neck down. In addition to film clips, intimate home videos, and archival interviews with Reeve, filmmakers Ian Bonauto and Peter Etegyi have also included extended interviews with his friends, colleagues, and the three children he had with wife Dana Reeve (who tragically passed away from lung cancer less than two years after Reeve's death). The film relies on lengthy interviews with his family, including his three children. It also extensively covers Reeve's friendship with the late Robin Williams, a close friend and Juilliard School classmate. It is a story of hope, hardship, and real-life heroism.

This romantic drama about the space race did not get much attention when it opened in theaters this summer, but it may find new life on the planet of home streaming. It will fan the flames of conspiracy theorists who believe the moon landings were faked, but it may also fan the flames of your heart, as the film, set in the 1960s space race, stars a PR specialist brought in to boost NASA's image and pitch the idea of spaceflight as a “spaceman. Scarlett Johansson plays the role. She develops a working and romantic relationship with Apollo 11 manager Cole Davis (Channing Tatum) while staging a fake moon landing in case things go wrong.
