Sony sneaked in one of the most requested features for the PlayStation VR 2 at Siggraph 2024 Asia, a computer graphics and interactive technology exhibition in Tokyo.
The PlayStation VR is a great piece of kit, but it was missing one major feature compared to devices like Meta's Quest headset and the HTC Vive. Sony's headset is still constrained by the controller, making it feel more like a TV that sticks to your head than an immersive virtual experience. However, according to the Sony booth at Siggraph 2024, this feature appears to be coming to fruition. In a video posted to X by user kure, someone can be seen playing a VR game using only their hands.
The following report from UploadVR.com describes the Sony booth as saying that hand tracking is available in the PlayStation 5's latest SDK. If this is accurate, game developers will be able to integrate this feature into their games at this very moment and update some of the best PSVR 2 games already in circulation. Not only that, but PSVR 2 appears to offer low latency and smooth hand tracking at 60 FPS.
Interestingly, there is still no official announcement from Sony regarding this feature, with a brief mention of it buried in Sony's demo and announcement summary at Siggraph 2024. This feature is available in the latest PlayStation®5 development kit.”
It states.
The benefits of hand tracking in VR really cannot be understated. Being able to use your hands, reach, and grab things without the need for a controller helps build the experience. While it is true that the controller cannot always be removed, some of the best VR games still require a controller for some features, and having the option is always a good thing. But while the inclusion of this feature is certainly a boon for the PlayStation, it remains to be seen whether it will bring life back to the struggling device.
As it stands, we'll have to wait until Sony makes an official announcement regarding this additional feature. In the meantime, there is a list of the best VR headsets, most of which already have this feature.
