Meta has officially partnered with James Cameron to provide another reason to join the Quest VR bandwagon, as the filmmaker will use his Lightstorm Vision (the same technology used in “Avatar”) to provide exclusive mixed reality experiences.
In the announcement, Meta detailed Cameron's multi-year agreement with Lightstorm Vision, a partnership that will allow Meta Quest headsets to offer “live sports, concerts, feature films, and TV featuring well-known IP The partnership will bring 3D entertainment experiences on Meta Quest headsets, including “live sports and concerts, feature films, and TV series featuring well-known IPs,” the company said. [The stereoscopic technology behind Lightstorm Vision will also be available to other content creators on the platform, allowing them to create “high-quality” 3D content using advanced tools and AI. The goal is to improve access to 3D production tools, both for creators and for viewers on Quest headsets.
Cameron met with Andrew “Boz” Bosworth, Meta's CTO and head of the Meta Reality Labs division, to test Meta's advanced technology.
“I was amazed at the transformative potential and power, and what it means for content creators around the world,” Cameron said in a threaded post.
“I am convinced that we are at a historic tipping point, and by navigating that future with Meta, we will all have the tools to create, experience, and enjoy new and mind-boggling forms of media.”No word on MR content or what else to expect, but a Meta representative (via Variety) said that future projects will be shared “in the coming months.”
Cameron's IP, which has produced such classics as “Titanic,” “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” and “Alien,” could be used in an upcoming TV series or movie that will appear on Meta Quest. Furthermore, Lightstorm Vision was also used in the production of “Avatar: The Way of Water” and the upcoming “Avatar: Fire and Ice,” so it is safe to say that we can expect some great visuals.
Meta Quest continues its recent string of big releases, including the more affordable (and worthwhile) Meta Quest 3S and popular games like Batman: Arkham Shadow. Now, with James Cameron on board, Meta Quest's VR and MR content offerings could take a big leap forward.
