Despite the interest in foldable devices, Apple has yet to announce a foldable of its own. If that is true, the foldable iPhone may have company. A new leak suggests that a foldable iPad will be coming from Apple in a few years.
The leak comes from X's regular tipster Jukanlosreve, who posted an image of what appears to be Apple's roadmap for iPad and MacBook displays. The roadmap describes Apple's plans through 2030 and suggests that the displays of both devices will change significantly over the next few years.
According to the images, Apple is likely to unveil an 18.8-inch foldable “tablet/laptop/monitor. The last two suggest a laptop replacement device, or a foldable portable external monitor. This huge device is said to have an OLED display with LTPO TFT and TSP on TFE. All this suggests a thin, dynamic display that can also be folded.
The foldable iPad claim is consistent with earlier rumors earlier this year when analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that Apple was working on a 20-inch foldable MacBook. At the time, it was rumored that a large foldable Apple device would not appear until 2027.
Apple seems hesitant to make a true laptop replacement tablet, but assuming Apple also makes the necessary iOS adjustments, this nearly 19-inch folding tablet may finally be that device.
It has long been suggested that Apple will move away from LCD displays on its iPads and MacBooks and switch to OLED panels, which offer better contrast and more true-to-life blacks.
Cupertino took the first step in this direction by announcing a 2024 M4 iPad Pro with a tandem OLED display.
Other iPad and MacBook OLED displays will begin appearing in 2026, according to a leaked roadmap.
Apple just released the much-improved 11-inch and 13-inch versions of the iPad Air this year, alongside the upgraded seventh-generation iPad Mini. Both feature Liquid Retina LCD displays.
Based on this map, a slightly larger 8.4-inch OLED iPad mini will appear in 2026, and the iPad Air will feature an OLED display in 2027.
The iPad Pro will keep the OLED display, adding TSP to the TFE, and will likely only get better, featuring no polarization.
As for the MacBook, the Pro version of Apple's laptop line will likely get OLED displays on its 14- and 16-inch versions in 2026, alongside the new iPad mini.
It also appears that the 2026 version will do away with the current notch cut for the webcam in favor of a punch-hole cut that suggests a smaller, more compact camera; given the rumors of a smaller camera on the M5-powered MacBook next year we may see an update to this display.
The MacBook Air will not have an OLED until 2028, according to the map; it appears to be the same type of display found in the MacBook Pro.
This roadmap is from analyst firm Omdia and is not guaranteed. Nevertheless, Ross Young, an analyst with Display Chain, commented on Jukanlosreve's tweet that he presented similar information at the OLEDs World Summit this week.
