Netflix's new western thriller is one of my most anticipated shows of 2025.

I can't get enough of western thrillers, so I'm very excited that Netflix is airing a new show in this relentless, gritty genre. The dangerous landscape, the raw emotional stakes of protecting one's family, and the constant fight for survival are gripping. This kind of storytelling keeps me hooked from the start.

Netflix has released the first trailer for “American Primeval,” a western thriller scheduled for release in January 2025. I have to admit, after watching 10 seconds of the trailer, I added it to my must-see list for next year.

The show promises an intuitive dive into life on the untamed frontier and an exploration of the dark side of humanity in the wilderness. With an impressive cast and a story that promises to be full of tension and grit, this is one I'll be binge-watching over the weekend.

So here's everything we know so far about Netflix's next big thriller, American Primeval. Hate and fear spread like wildfire, while innocence and peace are on the brink of extinction. Compassion is a scarce virtue, grace is even scarcer, and true security is nowhere to be found in this untamed land.

“American Primeval” delves deep into these turbulent times, weaving a fictional tale that explores the violent clash of cultures, faiths, and communities as individuals vie for supremacy in a harsh and unforgiving world. Through a gripping ensemble cast, the film examines the heavy price of venturing into a lawless frontier where sacrifice is inevitable and a steep price to pay for survival.

Taylor Kitsch stars in this gritty six-episode show that brings to life the adventurous spirit and untamed spirit of the American West. Other cast members include Betty Gilpin, Kim Coates, Jay Courtney, Kyle Bradley Davis, Dane DeHaan, and Shea Whigham.

“American Primeval” was Peter Berg's first project to sign a first-look deal with Netflix. The series was written by Mark L. Smith and directed by showrunner and executive producer Eric Newman. This is the second time Berg, Newman, and Kitsch have teamed up, following the 2023 limited series Painkiller.

Director and executive producer Pete Berg told Netflix: “I'm very grateful that Netflix trusted me to take a big swing at American Primeval, and I'm very grateful that Netflix trusted me to take a big swing at American Primeval.” I am so grateful that Netflix trusted us to take the big chop,” he said. We are going into the belly of the beast.”

Netflix also has the official synopsis: “This is America . .1857. Above or below, pain is everywhere, innocence and serenity are losing the battle against hatred and fear. Peace has become a minority, very few have kindness, and even fewer know compassion. There is no safe haven in this brutal land, and there is only one goal that matters: survival.

From the looks of the trailer, “American Primeval” is sure to be a smash hit. The uncharted American frontier and the gritty, intense storyline seem guaranteed to thrill from start to finish. The limited series format also works in its favor, as the tight, focused storyline never drags on.

There is also good news. American Primeval will arrive on Netflix on January 9, 2025, with all six episodes available at once. That means we don't have long to wait; Netflix has proven its ability to create compelling original series, and it looks like this Western thriller will continue that trend.

Need something to watch in the meantime? Check out Netflix's new action thriller show starring Kiera Knightley; Netflix also has a new No. 1 show that will split viewers in two.

Stream “American Primeval” on Netflix starting January 9.
