Oh, the weather outside is frightful. But this December Max's new movies are fun.
Yes, as always our pick of the best streaming services has added another new movie this month. And as always, we scrutinized the list of all the new releases on Max in December 2024 to see which films are the best of the best.
What surprised us was that there were seven films that received 95% or higher ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. It is not surprising that Max added so many highly rated films. However, all seven of these films are classics. None of them are newer than 1944.
But just because they are old does not mean they are not worth seeing. In fact, one of these films is widely considered one of the greatest films ever made.
So without further ado, here are seven new Max movies to watch in December 2024 that are 95% or better on Rotten Tomatoes and available for streaming right now.

Neither Davis nor Bogart appear in this film, but the incomparable Judy Garland does. She played Esther Smith in “Meet Me in St. Louis.” The story centers on her romantic relationship with John Truett (Tom Drake), but is told as a series of seasonal subplots about the Smith family from the summer of 1903 to the World's Fair in the spring of 1904.
As a musical, however, “Meet Me in St. Louis” is best known for Judy Garland's vocal performance. The film debuted the pop standards “The Trolley Song,” “The Boy Next Door,” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” written by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blaine, which continue to this day.

If you've read my thoughts on “The Monceuil Spade,” then this film needs no introduction. But for those of you who are not familiar with “The Maltese Falcon,” let me introduce you to one of the greatest films of all time.
This detective noir film stars Humphrey Bogart as legendary San Francisco private eye Sam Spade. One day, Ruth Wanderly (Mary Astor) walks into his office and asks him to look into the disappearance of her sister. But Wonderly's real identity is a woman named Bridget O'Shaughnessy, and she has been less than faithful to Sam. The situation quickly spirals out of control into a battle over a legendary statue of a golden falcon, considered one of the world's greatest treasures. The Maltese Falcon” is a must-see this month on Max.

“The Shop Around the Corner” Starring James Stewart as Hugo Matuszek's (Frank Morgan) top Budapest leather goods He plays Alfred Kralik, a salesman. He also works with Clara Novak (Margaret Sullavan), Matuszek's top saleswoman, and they can hardly stand each other. Of course, they eventually fall in love, but only after realizing they are in love through an anonymous letter.
The film admittedly ignores some important events taking place in and around Budapest in the 1930s, but politics is not the point of the story. Adapted from the Hungarian play “Parfumerie” by Miklós László, the film is a pure romantic comedy with nuances of drama.

Humphrey Bogart may have been the star of many of the films on this list, but “National Velvet” may be Bogart's next greatest acting icon, Elizabeth Taylor.
The sports drama stars Taylor as 12-year-old Velvet Brown, an English girl who dreams of racing her horse, “The Pie,” in the Grand National steeplechase. When her family hires impoverished former jockey Michael “Mi” Taylor (Mickey Rooney) to help out in the Brown family store, Velvet sees her chance. If you like stories with a similar feel to “Rocky,” “National Velvet” is a classic worth seeing.
