Netflix kept us on the edge of our seats in November with a handful of thriller shows while delivering a slew of early Christmas releases.
The latest streaming release is the new conspiracy thriller “The Madness,” which launched on November 28 and has already taken the #1 spot from “A Man on the Inside” in the Netflix Top 10.
Despite the attention it has garnered from viewers, “The Madness” has not been as well received as Netflix's other recent hit shows; a simple search on X (Twitter) shows just how divided opinions are. I've seen shows called “10's” and “masterpieces,” to ones called “terrible” and “trash.”
If you are anything like me, this divide in opinion makes you want to stream something more. I'm ready to see these pros and cons for myself. Below is more information about “Madness” and a brief summary of critics' comments about the series so far. [Political consultant-turned-media critic Muncy Daniels (Domingo) finds himself in the middle of a dangerous conspiracy. In the midst of a slight slump in his life, he goes on a work vacation alone and settles deep into the Poconos forest. During his stay, he stumbles upon the murder of a well-known white supremacist.
Muncie manages to escape the scene alive, but his ordeal has only just begun. Evidence against him begins to pile up and it becomes clear that he is being framed for murder.
As word of his crime spreads, Muncie is forced to flee in a world where truth is lost and he must fight to clear his name, protect his loved ones, and get to the bottom of this tangled web of lies.
If you're looking for a new thriller to get hooked on, “Madness” might just be the Netflix binge for you. I am already immersed in this series and am intrigued to see what happens next. It has all the hallmarks of a solid thriller (lots of twists and shocks) and features some very watchable actors in the lead roles.
As mentioned above, “Madness” is not a film that I would recommend to everyone. At the time of this writing, only 69% of a total of 13 reviews have a critic score on the critical review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
Lucy Mangan of The Guardian gave the show a four-star rating, praising it as “smartly plotted and cleverly paced” and adding: “The ‘madness’ gains weight as it goes on, the truth is whatever you want it to be, and the wonderful fantasy gains traction with followers When it comes to power, it is a portrait of the world that always surpasses reality.
Collider writer Jeff Ewing gave “Madness” an 8/10, calling it “one of the finest (and most poignant) thriller shows of the year.”
Netflix's “Madness” sometimes relies too heavily on fictional institutions and unbelievable contrivances to be able to stand up to existing political and It's another dose of reality for a genre that sometimes relies too heavily on fictional institutions and unbelievable gimmicks to cozy up to the existing political and economic turmoil. The individual pieces fit together nicely to create a poignant, thrilling, and very watchable series."[20In contrast, Screen Rant's Greg MacArthur gave it a 4/10 rating. While he enjoyed the performances of the supporting cast, he argued that the film “falls short of expectations in theme and story” and that there are “too many tedious and unnecessary scenes to qualify the series as a worthy slow burn.”
We definitely recommend at least giving the series a try, but if you're still not completely convinced by the streaming of “Madness,” Netflix has plenty of recommendations to help you plan your viewing. We recently put together a list of Netflix thriller miniseries that you can watch in one sitting over the weekend.
