A number of drone sightings have been reported in New Jersey. A number of drone sightings have been reported in New Jersey.
Are they part of an elaborate prank? Are other countries spying on the United States? Are they aliens? Unfortunately, we do not know the answers to all these questions. Here is what we know so far about the New Jersey drone controversy.
This is perhaps the most pressing question regarding the New Jersey drone sightings. Unfortunately, we do not have a definitive answer to this question. Some say it is a manned aircraft flying legally, so we don't even know if it is a drone.
We now have more questions than answers about the origin of these flying boats. Even government officials in the region are frustrated by the situation. For example, Mayor Mike Gasari of Montvale, New Jersey, felt “very disappointed” in Wednesday's law enforcement briefing. A congressman from the area issued a release saying he was “frustrated by the lack of information and answers regarding drones.”
We know there is something in the skies of New Jersey. We know that many people have seen them.
It was mid-November when we first heard of drone sightings near Morris County, New Jersey. For almost an entire month, there have been strange drone sightings in the area; on December 3, the FBI field office in Newark said it had “reports from the public and police dating back several weeks.”
Picatinny Arsenal police confirmed 11 reports of evening drone activity between November 13 and December 6 near the Wharton-based facility.
After the initial report, we continued to see drone appearances in Morris County, which soon expanded to Somerset.
Other than reports from random citizens, the U.S. Coast Guard told the Associated Press that “multiple low-altitude aircraft were observed near our vessels in the vicinity of Island Beach State Park.” Coast Guard Lt. Luke Pineo's report is a bit more credible because it comes from a military source.
Such drone sightings are so numerous that government officials have had to intervene and respond.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said he is seeking more answers from the federal government. As far as we know,” Murphy told WBGO on Wednesday, ”there is no risk to public safety.
He continued, “I don't have a source for this. It is frustrating that there is no source for these things. Yes.”
Interestingly, while officials say there is no threat to the public, they also say they don't have the answers. So, without knowing what the drones are or where they came from, it is fair to ask if the public is safe.
“Until we know where the drones are coming from and what their intentions are, how can we say there is no imminent threat?” Tony Perry, mayor of Middletown, New Jersey, told CNN.
“There are tons of drones flying over New Jersey, but we don't know where they are coming from, where they are going, or who is flying them,” Republican Congressman Brian Bergen told CNN.
So far, the response seems to be more investigation and trying to figure out what is going on.
If you encounter these drones (or whatever they end up being), the FBI-Newark and New Jersey State Police want you to report what you see so they can investigate further.
Local authorities in Morris and Somerset Counties, New Jersey, issued a press release on the matter. The FBI-Newark and New Jersey State Police are asking the public to report any information related to any drones that may have been seen recently. Anyone with relevant information is asked to call 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or report online at tips.fbi.gov. Citizens can also upload videos through the latter's website,” the release states.
