George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) is a compassionate but troubled man who reaches his limit on Christmas Eve. Just as he is about to end his life at the limit, Clarence, his guardian angel, appears before him. He gives George a new perspective by showing him an alternate reality where he never existed. Ernest P. Worrell (Jim Varney), well-meaning but clumsy, gets caught up in Santa Claus' mission to find his successor before he retires. Santa comes to Florida in search of the children's television host he has chosen as his successor.
