Google Maps is one of the best map apps available for cell phones and computers. This is partly due to Google's constant updating of the app, but also due to its accuracy when driving. Google manages this by using a variety of sources, primarily user reports, to track traffic and speed cameras. And the tech giant is constantly looking for new and improved sources of information.
In a recent report, Android Police editor Dallas Thomas found a new Google Help Center page titled “Image Collection from Third-Party Providers (Dashcam).” Now, before anyone concerned about privacy buys a pitchfork and throws a dashcam into the local well, it is worth noting that Google is not raking in data from the general public here.
Instead, the help page states that the images are only being obtained from two partners: Geopost, which owns various delivery solutions like DPD, and Nextbase, a major dashcam provider in the UK.
Interestingly, Google mentions only one purpose for this data: to monitor changes in speed limits. This is an interesting concept; for example, it could inform drivers of changes in speed limits. In the UK, due to persistent work on highways, speed limit zones can often last a long time and can vary from month to month. Combine this with the recently added ability to add a digital speedometer to the app, and it would be much easier to adhere to the speed limit.
Google also elaborates on how it will handle privacy with this new measure. First, dashcam images will only be used from Geopost delivery drivers or members of Nextbase traffic safety clubs who have specifically agreed to participate. In addition, Google will not release any dashcam footage and will blur faces, license plates, and other identifiable information before passing it on to the AI and engineering teams.
As noted above, this data is currently taken only in the UK, but if it works, I wouldn't be surprised if Google goes more global. Regardless of Google's actions, I would also recommend always investing in one of the best dash cams to keep you safe on the road.
