Microsoft has partnered with Meta to bring Windows 11 to the Meta Quest headset, allowing users to bring their PC setup into mixed reality.
After announcing Mixed Reality Link last month, Microsoft's first preview app is now available for download in the store. The app is intended to seamlessly connect to Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S, allowing users to view their Windows 11 PC on up to three virtual monitors.
Currently, this app is only available for Quest 3 and 3S, so Quest 2 owners cannot (yet) try it out. Nevertheless, the app provides the full Windows 11 experience to the headset and allows for secure connection by simply scanning a QR code.
“Microsoft has partnered with Meta to make this experience available today in public preview and is excited to get feedback from the community,” the company said on its support page. Access from the Quest headset to a local Windows PC is seamless, and it takes only seconds to connect to a private, high-quality, multi-monitor workstation.”
Other apps in the Meta Quest Store allow users to connect to their PC via a virtual desktop, but the Microsoft app is free; Quest's Mixed Reality feature allows users to see the space around them (including the keyboard), and their surroundings never go completely dark.
Being a first preview, there are still some issues under the hood. As Microsoft notes, some of the known issues are:
Microsoft says it aims to resolve these issues and other feedback it has gotten from people using it over the next few months.
Meta has been on a roll with the Quest VR headset, the success of the low-cost Quest 3S, the introduction of big game IPs like Batman: Arkham Shadows, and even a partnership with James Cameron for further mixed reality projects. With seamless connectivity to Windows 11 PCs, there are even more reasons to jump on the VR bandwagon.
