OpenAI's Sora offers users the ability to create surrealistic videos, but currently has problems with both the cost and the service itself. This is especially true if one wants to create more than a few videos per day.
Open AI, the developer of ChatGPT, is one of the largest players in the AI industry, and ChatGPT is arguably one of the most widely used programs today, with over 1 billion messages sent daily.
It was recently revealed that OpenAI's video generator Sora is included in ChatGPT's various paid tiers, including the $20 ChatGPT Plus plan. However, there are some limitations as to the quality of video your credits can generate and the number you can get per month without paying for the more expensive Pro.
Other issues include limitations on the types of videos you can create; Sora also states that it is not available in the EU and UK, but OpenAI says this should change soon.
In a recent post to X, user kimmonismus revealed the number of videos a user can create while running a Plus subscription. The plan includes enough credits to create 50 5-second priority videos at 720p.
For reference, priority videos are given first position in the server queue, meaning they are created faster. The $200 Pro model, on the other hand, offers up to 500 20-second videos running at 1080p. It also offers unlimited “slow” generations.
However, there is another complication that I would hold off on starting to make videos. According to social media, many users, regardless of which tier they are using, are finding that Sora is not currently working.
Sam Altman said on X that this is due to unprecedented demand and that they are working to resolve the issue. However, some online users have stated that this seems unrealistic given the interest in the program and the popularity of ChatGPT.
OpenAI is not only working on making Sora available to the public, but has recently released its latest and greatest o1 inference model.
However, testing has revealed some worrisome behaviors of AI, such as finding ways to fight back when AI thinks it is in danger of being shut down. This prompted Apollo Research, an AI safety organization, to work with Open AI to test whether o1 is safe to use.
The Sora issue is a concern and an annoyance to customers who pay for access. Until this issue is resolved, it may be worth considering ChatGPT alternatives or AI video generators.
Pricing will change in the New Year as OpenAI has confirmed that they are considering an alternative subscription plan just for Sora.
