Samsung Galaxy S25 to Feature Qi2 - This Could Be a Game Changer for Android

When the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) announced the (then planned) Qi2 wireless charging standard nearly two years ago, it promised a breakthrough in wireless charging technology.

With Apple's approval, this essentially introduced MagSafe-style charging technology to Android phones, if manufacturers decided to make them compatible.

It turned out to be a massive “if” and no slam dunk seemed to be happening; as 9to5Google points out, there is only one Android phone using Qi2 so far (HMD's Skyline), and even Google recently ignored this technology in the Pixel 9, claiming somewhat inanely that there are no tangible benefits to be gained over Qi1. [If Google, the custodian of the Android operating system, sees no significance in Qi2, why would any manufacturer bother?

But there may still be hope: according to X's @Jukanlosreve, the reliable leaker Ice Universe suggests that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S25 series will support Qi2.

A quick note: According to another X post, Ice Universe made this claim in a private direct message on Weibo, so take this rumor with a pinch of salt. That said, Samsung likes to throw the kitchen sink at high-end devices in terms of features, so it wouldn't surprise us at all. The only other detail shared was that this will be capped at 15W - which is not a surprise given that this is the speed the WPC agreed to for Qi2 certified chargers in January 2023.

As longtime Tom's Guide readers may remember, I switched back to iOS in 2022 with a (then) shiny iPhone 14 Pro after 13 years on Android. I still use it today, and while I said I had no intention of buying any accessories, this photo clearly shows that I am, after all, a pretty weak person.

The photo shows a corner of my desk, where I have a Belkin 3-in-1 MagSafe Charger and a place to put my Apple Watch, AirPods, and the aforementioned iPhone. floats on the pedestal.

I love this charger and I love the MagSafe feature. Of course, I've used wireless charging before, but it was a pretty miserable experience. After shuffling the phone awkwardly millimeter by millimeter until it charged, I returned later to find that at some point it had stopped working and the phone was still half charged.

With MagSafe, this problem does not occur. As a freelancer who spends at least several hours a day at my desk, I no longer even keep a charger by my bed. I just keep my phone in the dock while I'm working and have the peace of mind that it will be at 100% by the time I'm done, and thanks to the StandBy mode introduced in iOS 17, I can even turn it sideways to display the clock.

Android users are missing out on this little fun and much more. As British mobile editor Tom Pritchard points out, magnets are not only good for charging: the Qi2 could usher in a golden age of useful accessories like in-car phone mounts and tripods.

Hopefully, the rumor is correct and Samsung will be the first major phone manufacturer to introduce Qi2 in its flagships. If that happens, it could open the floodgates to the kind of user-friendly change that WPC promised nearly two years ago.
