Nokia Launches Online Museum Showcasing Classic Cell Phones; Nostalgia is Real

Before the iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, and Google Pixel, there was Nokia. And then there was Blackberry: ...... But that's another story. Speaking of the pre-smartphone era, Finland's Nokia ruled the roost thanks to cold-blooded masterpieces like the 3210 and 1100.

If you're ready to put on your rose-colored glasses and get behind the wheel of a DeLorean, mark January 15, 2025 on your calendar. That's when the Nokia Design Archive goes online, essentially an online portal to the cell phones of yesteryear. Along with a catalog of Nokia's greatest hits, “never-before-seen documents” and “never-before-seen prototypes” will also be available.

Our sister site Wallpaper* was able to get an early peek at what's in store, courtesy of Aalto University in Helsinki, which is curating this selection. The archive documents nearly two decades of Nokia history and includes sketches, concepts, and marketing materials surrounding its most famous handsets.

Aalto University reduced its repository of over 20,000 files (960 GB of data) to reach the 700 featured in the online museum.

The University has also acquired Microsoft Mobile (Lumia's Windows Phone, anyone?), which acquired Nokia in 2014.

This online archive is sure to be a big hit with cell phone fans (check out the Mobile Phone Museum if you haven't already).
