I love my MacBook. Apple notebooks are some of the best laptops you can buy today. But that doesn't mean it's perfect, and my biggest problem is the notch at the top. [According to a product roadmap published by research firm Omdia, Apple is planning to get rid of the notch on the MacBook Pro and put a small hole for a webcam.
To me, this proves two things:
However, we may have to wait a while, as this confirms another leak we reported early last month, that the M5 Pro is scheduled to be redesigned around OLED in 2026. This means that the M5 Pros will still come with a frustrating notch.
And honestly, you can't blame the team for feeling this way: when we first saw the notch on the iPhone X, iOS was baked around its presence.
Face ID provides a quick and secure way to unlock the phone, and a small piece of information is placed on either side, with different core features available by operating either side.
In the MacBook world, on the other hand, the notch adds nothing and rather takes away from the power user experience. There is no interaction with this area on the display, the mouse cursor can be lost behind it, and if you are a menu bar app addict like me, there is no barrier to its volume. It disappears down a notch.
Sure, there are apps like Bartender and others that move the system icon to appear in the control center, but that adds a layer of clicks and slows down macOS navigation. So, honestly, I think it's best to leave it as is.
Now, if the notch itself were used for something impactful to the user experience, its presence might have been somewhat forgiven. I mean, Apple crammed all kinds of sensors into the iPhone's notch to support Face ID, but none of them made it onto the MacBook; it would have been nice if you could unlock it by simply scanning your face, like Windows Hello, but that didn't happen! It did not!
The only thing that was included was a webcam; I can't believe Apple didn't think of that. So since the team is not going to do this, it makes sense to ditch it in favor of a more subtle and smaller hole.
And if you see someone else mention the words “Dynamic Island on the MacBook,” please reread the last few paragraphs; Apple hasn't done anything to make macOS notch-ready, and this unnecessary, obtrusive menu bar is something They have shown no intention of adding anything newsworthy to this unnecessary and obtrusive menu bar.
Sometimes the best answer is the simplest one: a small webcam above the display. Let's not overcomplicate it; show us more of what Tandem OLED is all about, and if the iPad Pro M4 is any indication, the next generation of display technology for the MacBook Pro will be phenomenal.
