Chris Evans Reportedly Returning to Marvel Universe for “The Avengers”: Doomsday

When Chris Evans left the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the end of “The Avengers,” it seemed as if he had graduated from the nearly 20-year-old Disney superhero franchise: along with Robert Downey Jr. along with Robert Downey Jr. he seemed to have put an end to Disney's nearly 20-year-old superhero franchise.

And to this day, he has stayed out of the Marvel world. However, according to a new report by Deadline, Evans will return in Joe and Anthony Russo's “The Avengers: Doomsday.”

According to the report, it is not known what role Evans will play in the Marvel return film. With Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson set to play Captain America in the new film, we probably won't see Evans in the iconic costume. He could be Steve Rogers.

However, he could return as a different character, like Downey Jr. who will return as Dr. Doom fighting the latest Fantastic Four quartet played by Pedro Pacal, Joseph Quinn, Vanessa Kirby, and Ebon-Moss Backrak.

Evans previously said he would need a strong reason to return. Since appearing in the last Avengers film, Evans has starred opposite the Russo brothers in the Netflix spy thriller “The Gray Man” opposite Ryan Gosling.

Recently, Evans stepped back into the hero genre with a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine. But in that film he played Johnny Storm, the original Marvel super being from the early 1980s “Fantastic Four,” which also starred Michael Chiklis and Jessica Alba.

To date, the Russo brothers have directed four MCU films: “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Captain America: Civil War,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” Avengers/Endgame,” which is ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

Since “Endgame,” Marvel Studios and Disney have struggled with succeeding Marvel movies and shows that have been more flops than hits. It is a combination of genre fatigue, bad movies, worse shows, confusion about the multiverse, and controversy with the various actors involved in the current MCU.

Bringing back the Russo brothers and other big-name actors from the first 23 films in the Marvel arc seems like an attempt to catch lightning again. At the very least, the next Avengers should be interesting.

“Avengers”: Doomsday is set for release on May 1, 2026, with the sequel, “Avengers: Secret Wars,” slated for May 20, 2026.
