The 5 best shows you missed in 2024 - and where can you stream them now?

With so many streaming services on the market, trying to keep up with all the new releases worth watching is a pretty daunting task.

Most of us subscribe to at least a number of streaming services like Netflix or Prime Video (or other services).

With this in mind, I've picked out a few shows that I feel didn't get the love they deserved when they aired in 2024.

Honestly, this entry could replace most Apple TV Plus releases, with the exception of Slow Horses and Silo, for example. Apple streamers are home to a very wide range of TV shows, many of which have rightfully received little attention. As a longtime “Trying” fan, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to admire it once again. This wonderfully heartwarming British sitcom is back for its long-awaited fourth season. Nicky (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) remain among the best couples on television, and the tone is still as deftly balanced between wryness, wit, and the poignant and demanding challenges of everyday life, and that unique authenticity lives on beautifully. Oh, and it's still supremely funny. Watch

It's a shame that “Ripley” didn't find as many viewers as it should have: according to Netflix data, the show peaked at #6 in the global top 10 in its second week of service (April 8-14), It then dropped off the charts completely. The film is the latest from Steven Zaillian, who has reinterpreted Patricia Highsmith's “The Talents of Ripley” and stretched it into an incredibly stylish eight-part noir slow burn series. Though slow, this is TV worth investing in, anchored by Scott's fantastically complex central character. At the risk of sounding like a test of patience, “Ripley” is an enveloping work, and it's hard not to be drawn into this old crook's web of lies.

I apologize in advance to those of you who have already heard me yammering on about “My Lady Jane” at some point this year, but when Prime Video decided to discontinue this bizarre and ahistorical fantasy series after just one season I was greatly disappointed when Prime Video decided to discontinue this bizarre and ahistorical fantasy series after only one season. Gemma Burgess' adaptation of the Lady Jane YA novels reimagines Lady Jane Grey (famous as the “Queen of Nine Days” due to her very short reign) and reimagines her life as the protagonist. It's filled with irreverent and poignant British humor, sultry scenes, and copious amounts of swearing, making it a delightful eight-episode romp that is still worth checking out today.

Do you like police dramas? Satire. Action comedy. Weird and inventive metafiction. Good news: “Interior Chinatown” is all of the above. This Hulu original is a 10-part meta-narrative about Willis Wu (a very funny Jimmy O. Yang), based on Charles Yu's 2020 novel of the same name. Wu is a background character on a cop show called “Black and White” who spends his days dreaming of the spotlight. Then Wu witnesses a crime while on the job in Chinatown. He then becomes the assistant to another “black and white” detective in the ensuing investigation, and from there it turns into a satirical drama in which Woo discovers more and more secrets about his family and the world around him.

With the last months of 2024 flooding our screens with (great) spy thrillers, it's no wonder we missed at least one: Apple TV Plus has “Slow Horses,” Netflix has “Black Doves, Paramount Plus aired “The Agency,” and Peacock aired “The Day of the Jackal. Reimagining Frederick Forsythe's classic spy thriller, the story revolves around a mysterious assassin known as “The Jackal” (Eddie Redmayne) and the deadly game of chance between MI6 agent Bianca Pullman (Lashana Lynch) who is determined to catch him by any means necessary The film is a thriller that travels around the world, and is full of unique personalities. This globe-trotting, character-driven, genuinely thrilling film brings it all together for a killer end-of-year evening.
