Peloton today announced a voluntary recall of its Tread and Tread+ treadmills pursuant to an agreement with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) According to the company, owners of the Tread and Tread+ will receive a full refund for the devices

The voluntary recall affects approximately 125,000 Peloton Tread and Tread+ machines, costing $2,495 and $4,295, respectively Neither machine is currently available as a result of the recall

Peloton also issued an apology for fighting back against the CPSC's initial warning

In April, the CPSC issued a warning that Tread+ posed a threat to children, causing the death of one child and the injury of at least 39 others The latter number has since increased to over 70

In March, Peloton CEO Mark Foley mentioned the child fatality on the company's blog and offered safety tips regarding Tread+ and children However, following the CPSC's warning, the company decided not to issue a recall in April

Peloton is now changing course In a joint statement with the SPSC, Foley said, "The decision to recall both products was the right one for Peloton members and their families To be clear, Peloton made a mistake in its initial response to the Consumer Product Safety Commission's request to recall Tread+ We should have engaged with them more productively from the beginning For that we apologize

"Today's announcement reflects our recognition that by working closely with the CPSC, we can increase safety awareness among our members We believe strongly in the future of home connected fitness and are committed to working with the CPSC to set new industry safety standards for treadmills We have a desire and responsibility to be the industry leader in product safety"

According to a Washington Post article, treadmill injuries are not limited to Peloton machines According to the Post article, in 2019, approximately 22,500 people were treated in emergency rooms across the US for treadmill-related injuries, including approximately 2,000 children under the age of 8 The CPSC also received reports of 17 treadmill-related deaths between 2018 and 2020 but not all were children

The Post also reported that where the CPSC had planned to file suit to force Peloton to issue a recall, the company lobbied the Commission for an agreement

The joint statement noted that Peloton had stopped selling both treadmills Federal law prohibits the sale of products that are subject to voluntary recall by the manufacturer or mandatory recall ordered by the Commission
