Compared to Legendary's previous entries in the montverse, this film wisely sidelines the (incredibly silly) plot and fills the screen with countless monster brawls that look and sound very impressive. Film critics, on the other hand... . were less pleased. Critics were split down the middle, with the film currently receiving a 54% rating from just under 250 authorized reviews on the platform.
The Guardian's Benjamin Lee gave Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire three stars, calling it “fun but far sloppier” than 2021's Godzilla vs. Kong. Returning to the action, it scratches an itch, or at least provides the basic childlike satisfaction of watching giant monsters face off.
In a BBC review, Caryn James gave Wingard's monster movie a 2/5-star rating, calling it “a dazzling visual triumph that already feels old.”
