Microsoft is taking one of the least used things in Windows 10 to the back of the woodshed in Redmond
Honestly, you may not even know it's there, as it's one of the weird little pieces of digital garbage that Windows 10 has accumulated over the years However, Microsoft is already beginning its spring cleaning, just in time for the big Sun Valley update that is said to rejuvenate the look of Windows 10
Microsoft itself announced the news in a blog post titled "Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 21322" published on Wednesday, February 24; TechRadar reported on the announcement earlier
The post notes that under Changes and Improvements, "After updating to this build, 3D object folders will no longer appear as special folders in File Explorer"
Good-bye and good riddance For those who don't remember, there was a time (circa 2016) when Microsoft was going all out on 3D objects That's why the app has Paint 3D and 3D Effects
Microsoft's obsession with all things 3D also led to the launch of mixed reality glasses called Microsoft HoloLens
These days, its 3D Objects folder is just taking up space that will (we hope) be better used in the aforementioned Sun Valley update scheduled for fall 2021
Of course, Microsoft is loathe to remove any functionality altogether and has provided a way for users to find the 3D Objects folder if they need it It can be found by typing "%userprofile%" in File Explorer or by selecting "Show All Folders" in the navigation pane options
