After years of construction and delays, Samsung's AR smart glasses are finally about to become a reality.
Earlier this week, Seoul-based Yonhap News reported that Samsung will unveil the new wearables at the Samsung Galaxy S25 Unpacked Event in January 2025.
Today, tipster Jukanlosreve claimed in a late Friday night tweet that the new smart glasses will not have a display and will instead resemble Meta's Ray-Ban glasses (pictured above worn by Tom's Guide editor in chief Kate Kozuch)
This was not the case.
This, they said, is because micro-LED technology is “immature.” They further stated that the second or third generation of Samsung glasses will feature micro-LED displays starting in 2026.
There are other clues that Samsung will soon announce a new platform. At the summer Unpacked event where Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6, the company announced that a new XR product would be available by the end of the year; in November, it showed a headset with a controller and gesture controls, similar to the Meta Quest 3S Samsung's patent was published. That patent also suggested a set of smart glasses.
Speaking of Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook may release a competing product with a display as early as 2026. Earlier this year, the company already revealed Project Orion, a set of smart glasses with a micro-LED display. However, the project is more conceptual, with only 1,000 units produced for testing and developer use. It is unclear when a mass-produced commercial version will be available.
The tweet claims that the displays may be used by Chinese company JBD, which already produces micro-LED projectors for smart glasses. However, as of this writing, JBD's products are not, to our knowledge, associated with any smart glasses manufacturer.
