According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is expected to introduce a new generation of AirTag trackers next year with significantly improved range.
Gurman believes that Apple will “significantly expand” the range of the AirTag 2 using the next-generation ultra-wideband chip (UWB) found in the iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Ultra 2.
The current AirTag tracker (available in 2021) is capable of precision positioning from 30 to 100 feet away. According to Garman, “the new model should triple that by using a next-generation ultra-wideband chip.”
Previous leaks and rumors have suggested that Apple will launch this product in mid-2025, and Garman said last month that production of the new version has begun. What we don't know, however, is how the upgraded chip will affect the price. Apple launched the AirTag for $29 per unit or $99 for a four-pack. Most of the time (as of this writing), they are sold at a discount on Amazon and Best Buy. However, it remains to be seen whether Apple will keep the price the same or raise it.
Thanks to the new UWB chip, iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 owners can find each other up to 200 feet away using “Precision Finding” in the “Find My” app. The same feature could be included in AirTag 2.
Aside from the Precision Finding feature, AirTag can also use the vast Find My network to track keys, wallets, and luggage over great distances. Just don't forget to double-check your battery level before embarking on a long-distance journey.
While the internals may be upgraded, Garman does not expect the exterior to change in the upcoming model. That makes sense given the vast array of first- and third-party AirTag accessories produced in the past three years.
