Google announced surprise upgrades for Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel Fold.

A few weeks ago, we heard speculation that Google might extend Android support for the Pixel 6. Google's support page now confirms that this is true, but it does not affect only the Pixel 6.

According to Google, the Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and the original Pixel Fold will receive two more years of Android software updates, bringing the total to three to five years. These three models were already slated to receive five years of security updates, but Google is sweetening the deal for those who want to keep their phones a little longer.

This means that Pixel 6 phones will receive Android updates until October 2026, which should include Android 16 and 17; Pixel 7 phones will receive their last update in October 2027, before the Android 18 The Pixel 6a and Pixel 7a will be supported a bit longer, until May 2027 and May 2028, respectively; the Pixel Fold should receive its final update in June 2028.

Whether the latter three models will have access to additional versions of Android all depends on when Google releases the update. Given that Google plans to release Android 16 in the spring, it is possible that the last update will take place before these models lose official support. However, it all depends on whether Google will stick to its policy of releasing future Android updates by the end of the year.

That's not as impressive as the seven years of support Google is promising for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 series, covering security and Android updates. However, it is a pleasant surprise to receive Android updates for five years after only expecting Android updates for three years.

Google has not explained why they did this, but it is probably due to the fact that they are trying to provide some degree of equity among their devices. In addition, there has been a big push toward sustainability recently, and offering longer software support may encourage people to keep their phones longer.

At the very least, better support should increase the trade-in value of older phones. Assuming, of course, that they are still in good condition.
